About

The original Super Mario Bros. defined the platformer genre when it launched in 1985. This PICO-8 demake captures the essence of that groundbreaking experience — running across the Mushroom Kingdom, collecting powerups, and defeating Bowser's minions — while making concessions to fit within the fantasy console's token limits.

Five levels span the early worlds of the original game, featuring all classic powerups (Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Star), seven enemy types, moving platforms, warp pipes, and beanstalks. Physics are simplified compared to the NES original, and some mechanics like running across narrow pits have been removed to stay within token constraints. The game starts Mario in his Super form and includes a forgiving fire flower buffer, making it slightly more accessible than the source material.

Gameplay

Mechanics

  • Powerup System: Collect Super Mushrooms to grow, Fire Flowers to shoot fireballs, and Stars for temporary invincibility
  • Enemy Variety: Seven enemy types including Goombas, Koopas, and flying variants — each with distinct behaviors
  • Moving Platforms: Ride platforms across gaps and chasms while timing your jumps carefully
  • Warp Pipes & Beanstalks: Discover hidden paths to bonus areas and alternate levels
  • Backward Scrolling: Unlike the NES original, this demake allows scrolling in both directions
